PBT vs ABS Keycaps: Durability, Sound, Cost, and How to Choose
Keycap material defines how a keyboard feels after month one, sounds out of the box, and photographs on the retail shelf. The PBT versus ABS decision is the single most consequential keycap choice in any OEM program.
The Materials
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is the classic keycap polymer – smooth, glossy, cheaper to mold, and capable of the legendary double-shot translucent legends that glow under RGB. PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) is harder, more brittle, matte-textured, and dramatically more resistant to the shine and polish that develops on heavily-used ABS caps.
Shine, Sound, and Feel
ABS develops an oily shine on high-contact caps (WASD, space) within months of heavy use – enthusiasts either hate it or prize it as vintage patina. PBT resists shine for years. PBT is slightly higher pitched and drier in sound; ABS reads deeper and more muted. Neither is objectively better – premium sets exist in both – but PBT has become the marketing shorthand for durability at retail.
Legend Processes
ABS owns double-shot molding – injecting two polymers so the legend is physically part of the cap, never fading. PBT pairs best with dye-sublimation, where ink is infused below the polymer surface. Both produce permanent legends. Laser-etched and pad-printed legends (common on entry boards) will wear and are the budget tier to avoid in premium lines.
Cost and OEM Strategy
ABS runs roughly 20-35% cheaper per set at volume with more color flexibility in double-shot. PBT tooling is heavier and cycle times longer. A common retail strategy: ABS double-shot on the value tier, PBT dye-sub on the mid tier, PBT double-shot on the flagship – each step tells a clear upgrade story at the shelf.
Frequently Asked Questions
A: Yes – PBT double-shot with translucent legends, or backlit dye-sub with cut-out legends. PBT legends glow slightly softer than ABS, which many buyers prefer.
A: PBT sets typically carry slightly higher MOQs due to molding capacity – plan 3,000 sets for custom PBT colorways versus 1,000-3,000 for ABS runs.
